Students are going to love creating their own digital avatar characters and you’re going to love all of the technology skills work they are getting.

This resource works on so many great technology skills. While students may be familiar with paper and pencil glyph activities, it takes it to a whole new level to do it digitally.

They will be asked to work across slides in either Google Slides or PowerPoint, copy and paste between slides, resize pieces, layer pieces, group pieces, and save their finished work as an image file. All while completing an engaging get-to-know-you activity.

Description

Students are going to love creating their own digital avatar characters, (since they aren’t old enough to make a Bitmoji or Facebook Avatar) and you’re going to love all of the technology skills work they are getting.

Need an easier version for your youngest students? Try the Build a Character Digital Glyph

Teacher Prep:

1. Plan on how to show the instructional video to your students (or plan a mini lesson demo yourself)

2. Plan how students will save their final Avatar. In the video I used the snipping tool that comes with a window’s device, but your setup may be different. You will need to show students what you want them to do.

3. Plan how you want to share the file with your students. I’m providing the Google Slides file link but you can also use this as a PowerPoint file. Using Google Classroom makes it really easy, but any learning management system can be used to send the file to students.

Skills Addressed:

•Navigating to the file

•Navigating between slides in a Google Slides or PowerPoint file

•Copy and paste pieces between slides

•Resize pieces

•Layer pieces

•Group pieces

•Save finished avatar as an image file

STANDARDS ADDRESSED

Strand: Innovative Designer

Standard: 4.b. select and use digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers design constraints and calculated risks.

I Can Statements:

I can use keyboard shortcuts to copy and paste

I can resize, arrange, and layer pieces in a presentation program

I can create visual representations of the solution to a problem

I can stick with a problem until it is solved

I can use the materials around me to help me solve a problem

I can create an original work using a digital tool

A note about diversity. While this resource has a decent amount of options for students to build an avatar that looks somewhat like them, it does not have all 8 billion combinations for the unique people on the planet. Please take a look at the preview to see if the options provided will work for you. In the instructional video I made a point of saying that the final avatar won’t look exactly like each person so hopefully that helps.

Students loved to make their own glyph that described themselves without using words. I loved being able to quickly glance at their pictures to find out more about them.

  2. Buyer (verified owner) –

A great resource to use with my students. They were really engaged and they beg for new ones all the time. Great for developing mouse skills and copy/paste skills.

  3. Valentina J. (verified owner) –

The Digital Glyph Activities are always fun & this one is no exception. The students loved creating an avatar! I love how they get to practice the ‘copy & paste’ procedures over and over in these resources! Again, my students absolutely loved this!

  4. Jennifer H. (verified owner) –

My Students loved this! They each spent time making it just like them and they all were very engaged! The best part was hanging them in the hallway for all the students to see what 3rd-5th created.

  5. Alison M. (verified owner) –

My 4th and 5th grade students enjoyed this resource during our technology time. We used this on our IPads and it was good review of copy and paste.

What teachers said on TPT

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 324 teachers on Teachers Pay Teachers.

“The older grades really enjoyed creating their own digital glyph. They had fun being creative. I loved it because it reinforced the copy and paste skill that we have been working on in other documents. This was a fun way to reinforce that skill. Students loved seeing each other's creations. It's a great way to add learning in a fun and engaging way. Thank you for sharing this resource! My students loved it and I will continue to use this in future years!”

— Jackie M R., TPT review

“This is the 2nd school year I have used this resource; it is just as engaging for my students the 2nd time around. The students who completed an avatar last school year felt like pros and helped those who were building them for the first time, as well as being excited to make changes for the new school year. Thank you for such a fun and engaging resource. I look forward to using this resource for many years.”

— Leila P., TPT review

“After 5 days in session, we had to quickly shift to distance learning. This was a great activity to use with my 6th grade STEAM students at the beginning of the year. The included tutorial was great and the directions were very easy to understand. The students loved the activity, and I enjoyed looking at the finished avatars and reading their stories about their avatars. I will definitely use this activity when my 2nd group of 6th graders moves into STEAM next 9 weeks.”
