Using technology and problem solving skills, students decipher codes and complete activities to learn about the parts of the computer for grades 3-5. The activities are housed in a Google Slides file and students enter their codes into a locked Google Form. If you’ve been wanting to try an escape room or digital breakout with your students, this is a great place to start.

Resource Format

  • This activity can be done in Google Slides or PowerPoint, so it is flexible to meet your technology needs.

Resource Includes:

  • There are 7 codes to find and they require a mix of technology skills, so this makes a great partner or small group activity.
  • Students learn about the parts of the computer by sorting, solving puzzles, doing mazes, etc.
  • Parts inside a computer, a brief computer history, and labeling a web browser.

Info for the teacher to consider:

  • Most groups should be able to complete it in 30-45 minutes.
  • If this is your first digital breakout then I recommend solving the puzzles as a whole group activity.
  • The hints are meant to be used! Most puzzles can’t be solved without taking the hint. It is designed this way on purpose.
  • With this resource you will receive a link to a Google Slides file. From there you can share your copy of the Slides file with your students, or download it as a PowerPoint file to share that way.

  1. Buyer (verified owner)

This was a great introduction to the parts of the computer. It was a bit difficult for the 3rd graders to remember all of the parts. I think that I will try it with older students in the future.

  2. Caralee S. (verified owner)

I’ve used these digital breakouts before and this set has been a great guide for what I need to teach. My students have loved breakouts in the past so when I’m done teaching the concepts, I will use the breakout as an assessment tool!

  3. Leigh S. (verified owner)

This was a great resource to review computer terms. My students enjoy these activities, especially working with a partner or in a small group.

  4. Caitlin S. (verified owner)

This was a great review for students over hardware and software. It was also a great resource for me to make sure I was teaching this correctly as I am new to this position. Thank you!

I used this with my Computer Club students. They had a great time working together to solve all the clues.
