It’s more than just a craft; it’s a coding journey. Students won’t just create; they’ll decode, think, and connect. It’s a celebration of friendship, creativity, and the wonders of binary code.
Here’s what the Binary Code Friendship Bracelet Craftivity & Booklet encompasses:
Objective: Introduce basic coding concepts and encourage algorithmic thinking.
Materials:
•Bracelet & Booklet Template
•Markers or Crayons
•Tape
•Scissors
•Stapler
Activity Steps:
Introduction: Begin by explaining the objective of the activity: to introduce basic coding concepts and encourage algorithmic thinking. Emphasize the importance of sequences and algorithms in coding and problem-solving.
Create Binary Booklets: Use the booklet template to discuss what binary code is with students. Have students color the booklet as you read together. Students will cut and staple their booklets together.
Binary Friendship Bracelets: Instruct students to circle the first letter of their name on the bracelet worksheet. Then use the binary code chart to color their bracelet, using one color for black and another color for white (0 and 1). They will repeat the process to create a binary bracelet for a partner.
Pairing and Sharing: Once students have created their coding bracelets, instruct them to pair up with a classmate. Each student should exchange their paper coding bracelet with their partner. They can help tape them onto the others’ wrist.
Additional Ideas:
•Adapt the complexity of the activity based on the age and skill level of your students. You could also have students use beads to create different bracelets.
•Encourage group discussions and collaboration during the activity. What patterns do they notice in different letters?
•Use this activity as a foundation for future discussions on coding and computational thinking. It is a great kickoff to the Hour of Code!
