WHAT CODING PROJECTS ARE INCLUDED?

DRIVE THE BUS: Inspired by Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!
Students choose a background and sprites, then use a start event and motion blocks to make the bus drive. As a bonus challenge, students can let the pigeon drive the bus!

MAKE THE APPLES FALL: Inspired by The Apple Pie Tree
Students add a fall background, tree, and apple sprites to create an animation of apples falling from the tree. The bonus challenge invites students to add a basket and sound effect.

MAKE THE BATS FLY: Inspired by Fiona the Fruit Bat
Students code bats flying across a nighttime sky. They can extend the project by coordinating the movement of multiple bats and adding an echolocation sound.

IMPORTANT TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION

Students need access to the free Scratch Jr app on compatible devices. The Scratch Jr app is not included with this resource and should be installed before beginning the lessons.

The picture books are not included. Links to publicly available read-aloud videos on YouTube are provided for convenience. Because external videos and school filtering settings can change, please preview all YouTube and Google Drive videos on a student device before using the lesson with your class.

Internet access is required to open the Google Slides and view the linked instructional and read-aloud videos.

Turn a familiar fall story into a purposeful coding experience! These Scratch Jr projects help young students move from listening and discussing to planning, coding, testing, and improving an animation of their own.
