I often hear that teachers have a class set of iPads and aren’t allowed to add new apps to them. They then think the activities that can be done are very limited. These tutorials and task cards are here to show you all of the possibilities with these 6 default apps that come pre-installed on iPads.
 
DESCRIPTION
Teacher Guide:
The goal of these lessons is to introduce students to six default apps on the iPad. Students will be able to understand the apps’ basic features and how to use the app across curricular areas.
 
Begin your lesson by introducing the six iPad apps and go over the basic features of each app:
  • Camera: The camera app allows users to take pictures and videos. Show the students some examples of what they can do with the camera app, such as taking a selfie or a group picture.
  • Maps: The maps app allows users to search for a location and get directions. Show the students a few examples of how the maps app can be used, such as finding a nearby park or restaurant.
  • Measure: The measure app allows users to measure the length, width, or height of an object. Show the students how to use the measure app by measuring the length of a table or the height of a chair.
  • Notes: The notes app allows users to create notes, which can include text, pictures, and even audio recordings. Show the students how to create a note, as well as how to add pictures and audio recordings.
  • Voice Memos: The voice memos app allows users to record audio messages, such as a reminder or a note to self. Show the students how to create a voice memo and explain what it can be used for.
  • Freeform: The freeform app allows users sketch ideas, such as brainstorming. Show the students how to create a board and the different ways they can add media, files, links, text, and more.
 
Using the task cards:
After a quick overview of the apps, students can use the task cards to learn more about the app. Cut and laminate as many sets as you’d like. You might also want to put the task cards on a ring to keep the tasks together for each app.
 
The task cards can be used as a center, in small groups, or whole class. Each set also includes a QR Code link to a short tutorial video of the app.
 
Exit Slip:
Print and cut exit slips for your students to use as they complete each app.
 
Additional Activity Ideas:
1. Have students use the camera app to take pictures of the classroom, their friends, and the teacher.
2. Have students use the maps app to find the nearest gas station.
3. Have students use the measure app to measure the length, width, and height of various objects in the classroom. You may also want to put together a basket of small items if utilizing at a center.
4. Have students use the notes app to create a note about something they learned in the lesson or something they want to remember.
5. Have students use the voice memos app to record a message to their classmates.
6. Have students use the freeform app to create an All About Me board where they include shapes and sticky notes of things they like.
