Sock Puppet

Sock Puppet is an interactive app that allows the student to learn the things in a much-learned environment. The students can easily learn and recreate new methods for their understandings. This app is getting popular amongst many teachers in the US as it makes learning easier. This app comes in two variants a free basic version and a paid version. The free version also allows you usage but with some limited features, whereas the paid version has all the locked features in it.

Here is how Sock Puppet works:

  1. The very first step is to open the app store in your mobile for downloading the Sock Puppet app.
  2. Once you have installed the Sock Puppet application now open the application.

3. When the application is opened on your device, tap on ‘new’.

4. When the new screen is opened, you will be needed to select the puppet for your activity. Do remember you can pick up to 4 puppets at a single go.

5. Once you have selected your one, two, three or four puppets, tap on next to move on to the next screen.

6. The screen will now show you the available backgrounds. Choose one of the available backgrounds from the menu. You can any time add more backgrounds in this background menu by paying up some money. Once you have selected the background to tap the next button on the bottom of the screen.

7. Now you need to select the props and scenery for your activity. You need to keep this in mind that the red ones are the unmovable sceneries, whereas the yellow ones are the moveable sceneries. It means that while you are recording, if you have selected a scenery with the red frame your character won’t move, whereas, on the other hand, if you have selected the scenery with a yellow background your character can be moved.

8. When you are done with selecting hit on next on the bottom of your screen.

9. Every time you are talking the puppet will move its lips in the same manner. In order to record your activity, tap the record button on the top of the screen.

10. You will see the time left in your recording down the stop button. Once you have recorded your activity, the application will automatically adjust your voice with the voice of a puppet character.

11. You will then be needed to save the file by taping the save button which will be in the bar on the top of the screen.

12. You can share your activity on different social media platforms as well.

13. In order to change the voice of the puppets, you can change them manually by going into the stings page in the main menu.

Alignment with the iTECH Model

  1. Inspire: Introduce Sock Puppet by showcasing how it can bring stories and ideas to life through animated puppetry. Discuss the role of storytelling and digital animation in learning to engage students’ imagination.
  2. Try: Guide students in exploring the basic functionalities of Sock Puppet, such as selecting characters and backgrounds and recording voices. Let students create a short, simple narrative or dialogue using the app.
  3. Expand: Introduce more complex narrative-building activities. Encourage students to develop a storyboard for their puppet show that includes a clear beginning, middle, and end. Teach storytelling elements like character development, plot structure, and emotional expression.
  4. Create: Assign a project where students use Sock Puppet to create a digital puppet show that narrates a story or demonstrates a concept learned in class. For social and emotional learning (SEL) lessons, have students create puppet shows that express feelings or social scenarios.
  5. Huddle: Organize a class session for students to present their Sock Puppet shows. Facilitate discussions on the storytelling process, character portrayal, and messages conveyed in the puppet shows.

Culmination Activity

After students create a narrative story, allow them to make use of Sock Puppets to bring their story to life. This helps motivate and excite students.

Social and Emotional Learning Lesson

Allow students to use the Sock Puppets App to talk about their feelings with a classmate. Just as with traditional puppets, this is a great non-threatening way for kids to communicate with both adults and their peers.

Tips for Effective Implementation

  1. Encourage Creativity: Motivate students to be imaginative in their use of Sock Puppet. Encourage them to experiment with different characters, scenarios, and voices. This creativity can lead to more engaging and dynamic puppet shows that capture their interest and imagination.
  2. Integrate Curriculum Content: Use Sock Puppet to reinforce learning in various subjects. For instance, students can create a puppet show based on a historical event, like the Boston Tea Party, or a scientific concept, such as the life cycle of a butterfly. By integrating curriculum content, students can deepen their understanding of the material while having fun.
  3. Focus on Communication Skills: Emphasize the development of oral communication skills. Encourage students to use clear and expressive voices for their characters and to convey their ideas and emotions effectively through digital puppetry. This practice can improve their public speaking abilities and boost their confidence in communicating with others.

Role of Educators

Educators can guide students in using Sock Puppet as a creative storytelling tool, providing support in both technical aspects of the app and narrative development. Encourage students to explore and express their ideas creatively and thoughtfully.

Sock Puppet offers a unique and engaging way for students to learn through digital storytelling and animation. By integrating Sock Puppet with the iTECH Model, educators can foster creativity, improve communication skills, and enhance learning in a fun and interactive way. Whether for academic subjects or social and emotional learning, Sock Puppet is a valuable tool for the modern classroom.
